After recently making history as the first Filipino to win a Golden Globe, 31-year-old Darren Criss marks it big for the Philippines in the entertainment scene again as he wins Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series during the 2019 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards for his performance in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

In the same category, Darren was joined by Antonio Banderas for his performance in Genius: Picasso, Hugh Grant for his performance in A Very English Scandal, Anthony Hopkins for his performance in King Lear, and Bill Pullmann for his performance in The Sinner, but it was Darren’s portrayal that deemed him successful after his third nomination in the awards show.

During his acceptance speech, Darren pays tribute to the victims that his serial killer character in the series Andrew Cunanan murdered in real life, saying, “The character I played unfortunately used masks to destroy things and so as an actor my goal was to use masks to create a positive change.” He states, “So for any of the families and friends of those affected by the destruction that he brought, I hope that they know our goal was to not make a spectacle of their tragedy but to create a positive dialogue about social issues and bring to justice things that were in the shadow,” continuing, “This is a high that will last a lifetime.”

Darren concludes his speech stating, “It is such an honor to be acknowledged by all of you so whether you voted here or at home, over there, thank you so very much. If you’re an actor, whether starting out, breaking through, or holding on, I wish you all the best. Break a leg. Thank you.”

The 2019 SAG Awards took place last Sunday, January 27 at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in California.
