Palace says Duterte eyes appointing Nograles as Cabinet Secretary
President Rodrigo Duterte is considering to appoint Davao City Representative Karlo Nograles as one of his Cabinet secretaries, according to Malacañang on Tuesday, October 30.
“He is one of those who is being considered,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a Palace briefing.
“The announcement will be made by the President himself,” he added.
The spokesman said Nograles is among the “leading” candidates who will take the post vacated by Leoncio Evasco, Jr. as he will run for governor of Bohol in the 2019 midterm elections.
Panelo did not give an exact date when the President will announce the replacements for Cabinet members who filed their certificate of candidacies (COCs) for national and local posts in the upcoming polls, but he said Duterte would likely announce it after All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ holiday.
The Palace official, meanwhile, said there is no confirmation yet if Senator Gregorio Honasan II will be the next Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) head.
Nograles, chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, is now on his third and final term as congressman.
His seat is being eyed by the President’s eldest son, Paolo Duterte, who was the former vice mayor of Davao City.
Nograles had expressed his support to the Presidential son, saying that Paolo Duterte is “very qualified” to be elected in the position he is currently occupying.
The congressman earlier announced his decision not to continue running for senator in next year’s elections, instead, he will just support the candidacies of his fellow Mindanaoans who share his “desire to bring development to the regions and uplift the welfare of our kapwa probinsyanos (fellow provincials).”
