Malacañang spoke out about its condemnation of the Negros Occidental massacre, which killed nine sugarcane workers, through a statement made by Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo last Sunday, October 21.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the reported deaths of sugar workers in Sagay City, Negros Occidental,” Panelo stated

“The Palace is deeply perturbed to learn about the incident and the Philippine National Police (PNP) has already been ordered to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation on this dastardly act,” he added

Panelo reassured the families of the victims that the Office of the President “will enforce the full wrath of the law against its perpetrators.”

According to Sagay Police Chief Insp. Roberto Mansueto, the incident, which happened last week, began when the members of the National Federation of Sugar Workers (NFSW) were having dinner inside their tents until they were attacked by around 40 armed men after attempting to occupy a private land in Hacienda Nene, Barangay Bulanon. A total of nine sugarcane workers were slain, three of their bodies were found to have been burned afterwards.
