MMDA to DPWH: Repair potholes along EDSA
MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is asking the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to repair potholes along Epifanio de los Santos Ave. (EDSA) amid the onset of the rainy season.
The MMDA on Thursdayc conducted an inspection and spotted large potholes in Guadalupe and Shaw Blvd. along the southbound direction, as well as the northbound and southbound stretch of Ayala, Arnaiz, and Cubao.
Two of them are located on the yellow lane that is dedicated to passenger buses.
“Continuous downpour these past few days have eroded portions of the major road, creating potholes of various sizes,” MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said in a statement Friday.
“We have received reports of motorcycle accidents because of these potholes. We advise motorists to take precautionary measures while motorcycle riders should stay on the motorcycle lane,” he added.
Garcia said these potholes force vehicles to slow down, causing further traffic congestion along EDSA during rainy days.
“A single vehicle that stops for five to ten seconds will cause three to five kilometers of traffic,” Garcia said.
The MMDA has coordinated with DPWH Undersecretary Robert Bernardo to immediately fix several potholes and damaged sections that hamper traffic flow along the major roads.
The DPWH has committed to hasten the repair and asphalting of damaged sections once the weather condition gets better, Garcia said.
