Saskatchewan’s International Skilled Worker – Express Entry sub-category has now closed, just hours after the first-come, first-served provincial immigration pathway reopened to 400 new applications.

The Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) opened the Express Entry-linked sub-category on Wednesday, June 13, and said it would close as soon as it reached its intake limit of 400 new applications.

That limit was reached approximately three hours later.

The International Skilled Worker – Express Entry sub-category operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning the 400 individuals who are quickest to apply can submit their applications.

Express Entry candidates who are nominated by Saskatchewan for permanent residence receive an additional 600 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points, effectively guaranteeing them an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence.

This was the second time in 2018 that the SINP opened its Express Entry sub-category to applications. The previous opening occurred on January 10 and also met its intake quota of 400 applications quickly.

Saskatchewan says it will accept a maximum of 2,600 applications through the International Skilled Worker – Express Entry sub-category in 2018, which means the SINP could still accept another 1,800 people between now and the end of the year.

The International Skilled Worker – Express Entry sub-category is particularly attractive because it does not require a job offer or a connection to Saskatchewan. Instead, it enables the SINP to nominate individuals who are already in Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)’s Express Entry pool.

Eligible candidates must possess the necessary education, skilled work experience in one of Saskatchewan’s 36 in-demand occupations, language ability, and other factors to help them settle successfully in Saskatchewan.

How to apply

In order to apply under this category, candidates must first submit a profile to the Express Entry pool and then create an account through the SINP’s online system.

Interested Express Entry candidates will need to obtain all the required documents and complete all the required provincial and federal forms.

All required documents must be clear and easy-to-read copies of the original documents.  If your documents aren’t in English or French, you must submit the following:

• A copy of the original document;
• A copy of the English or French translation of the document; and,
• A copy of an affidavit from the translator, describing their translation ability.

Once the stream opens to new applications, only those individuals who are quickest to submit a complete application before the intake limit is reached will be considered.

Applicants to the SINP’s International Skilled Worker – Express Entry sub-category who are then approved for a provincial nomination will be notified through the Express Entry system and have 30 days to accept the nomination.

Once a nomination is accepted, the nominee receives an additional 600 points toward their CRS score and will then be invited to apply for Canadian permanent residence in the next Express Entry invitation round.
