Roque stressed that the meeting between the two leaders showed that diplomacy and peaceful negotiations brought benefits worldwide.

“This development, which has underscored in the strongest terms the value of diplomacy and peaceful dialogue, augurs well for the peace, security and stability in the region and the world,” he said.

While he said that the summit was only the beginning of peaceful negotiations, he expressed readiness to give support to both countries in efforts to move forward.

“History has indeed been written. At the same time, this is but the beginning of a process. The Philippines is ready and willing to lend its support toward bringing it to fruition,” Roque said.

According to reports, the meeting between Trump and Kim was the first time a sitting US president met a North Korean head of state.

The two leaders discussed on the establishment of new US-DPRK relations and the building of a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, including commitment to denuclearization.

The summit comes after years of tensions and hostilities between the two countries.
