MANILA — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is still pushing for the installation of cable cars as an alternative mode of public transportation.

DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade said the department is currently in negotiations with various proponents to offer a rate that is similar to public utility vehicles (PUVs).

“There are also conversations I have not forgotten about the cable car. We are finalizing certain details. Hopefully, I would be able to convince proponents to agree on a rate,” Tugade said in a speech at the Asia CEO Forum at the Manila Marriott Hotel in Pasay City on Thursday.

“I want a rate of the cable car to be more or less parallel with the rates of the jeepney, the bus, the taxi, LRT, and MRT. I don’t want a rate that is high so that, you know, the public can benefit,” he added.

The proposed cable car system will start in the Pasig area with a capacity of 35 passengers per car.

The DOTr earlier said it is exploring the possibility of securing technical assistance or funding from the French government for a feasibility study on cable cars.

Before assuming office in June 2016, Tugade proposed that a cable car system be set up as one of the measures to ease the traffic congestion in Metro Manila.

He said the Philippines should consider the experience of Bolivia that use cable cars to help address the country’s traffic situation.
