MANILA — Newly appointed Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Undersecretary Francisco “Isko” Moreno on Tuesday assured a more “compassionate” service to indigents who seek assistance from the agency.

Makasisiguro po kayo na sa aking sariling kaparaanan at mga karanasan sa buhay, makatitiyak kayo na mauunawan ko po ang katayuan ng mga kababayan natin (Be assured that in my own capacity, my experiences, I can have a deeper understanding of the plight of our fellowmen),” Moreno said in his speech during the flag-raising ceremony at the DSWD Central Office in Batasan Hills, Quezon City.

Being once poor, Moreno said he knows well the common struggles of indigents and their need for compassionate service.

As he made the assurance, he asked fellow workers in the department to work hand in hand with him in providing excellent service to the poor.

“Many were called, but few were chosen. We were given the opportunity. And since we are the chosen ones, let us excel in doing it every day,” Moreno said.

He said he would be doing work in the field to serve and reach out to those in need, especially during calamities and disasters when the DSWD’s programs and services are needed most.

Moreno was appointed by President Rodrigo R. Duterte on May 8.

Prior to his appointment to the agency, the former actor-turned-politician was a member of the board of directors of the North Luzon Railways Corp.
