Duterte’s visit to Hongkong not a public stunt, says lawmaker

A lawmaker downplayed Magdalo party-list Representative Gary Alejano’s criticism against President Rodrigo Duterte’s recent visit to Hongkong.

It can be recalled that Alejano, a staunch critic of the president said that the latter’s trip to Hongkong achieved nothing that would benefit the country, and that Duterte giving a speech to Filipino domestic helpers and dining in a Filipino fast food chain were merely publicity stunts.

In response to this, ACTS OFW party-list Representative John Bertiz III said that Duterte went to visit Filipinos who remit a huge amount of money to the country.

“For the good information of our colleagues in the government, Hong Kong remits US$830 million every year, which is total of P43 million and that is part of the budget of the government,” he said.
He added that thousands of Overseas Filipino Workers’s (OFW) have waited long for the opportunity to see the president.
“Almost 290,000 OFWs in Hong Kong have waited long to see our beloved President because they know that this administration has a heart and compassion,” Bertiz said.
