VIGAN, Ilocos Sur — Cagayan Valley made an early statement in the first day of the Palarong Pambansa here on Monday.

As of 9:56 p.m., the Green Hawks scored two gold medals through Rahied Burdeos’ successful conquest in the elementary girls shot put, where she made a 10.13-meter throw, and Algin Gomez’s 6.96-meter long jump in the secondary boys division that bettered the rest of the field.

NCR also got two golds courtesy of Christian Ampong (secondary boys javelin throw) and Adrian Samudio (secondary boys triple jump).

Western Visayas was the most bemedalled team after Day 1 with five — one gold, two silvers, and two bronzes.

The lone gold came in record-setting style as Ann Quitoy broke the secondary girls javelin throw right in front of erstwhile record holder Sylvian Abunda, who settled for silver.

Abunda’s runner-up finish is one of Northern Mindanao’s two medals, both silvers, after Day 1. Bicol and Calabarzon each have one gold medal already with the former also taking a silver.

Mimaropa walked home with two silvers and one bronze in its pocket, while Soccsksargen got three bronzes after Day 1.

Central Luzon is the only other team with a medal, a bronze.
