Joma warns: Leftist to fight Duterte if branded as terrorists

Responding to the petition filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ), exiled Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founding chairman Jose Maria “Joma” Sison warned that rebels are willing to fight President Rodrigo Duterte with no hesitation if the administration would tag them as terrorists.
The justice department last Friday filed before the National Capital Region (NCR) Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 19 a petition seeking to formally tag 649 individuals as terrorists, including Sison and United Nations (UN) special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples Victoria Tauli-Corpuz.
“If Duterte is determined to destroy the revolutionary movement as he has announced, then [there is] no choice for the revolutionary movement but to fight him single-mindedly, no more hesitation,” Sison was quoted as saying in an ABS-CBN report.
Sison said that Duterte is trying to make the CPP-NPA [New People’s Army] a “scapegoat” so he can extend martial rule nationwide. He added that this move will pave way for the shift to a federal form of government which will install the Chief Executive “a highly centralized presidential power, a dictator lording over his fellow regional tyrants.”
In the same interview, the communist leader also disparaged Duterte’s threats to destroy the communist group, saying that his tactics were nothing compared to the schemes of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
“Duterte is overreaching. I know his capabilities, he is not a Marcos,” he stressed.
Despite these statements, Sison said that CPP-NPA remains open to peace negotiations with the Philippine government if Duterte will take back his threats.
On December 2017, Duterte signed a proclamation categorizing the CPP as well as the NPA as a terrorist group.
“It’s a proclamation declaring the Communist Party of the Philippines, New People’s Army as a designated, identified terrorist organization under R.A. No. 10168,” Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque told reporters in Malacañang last December 5.
“So as the President has stated before, he has finally classified the CPP-NPA as a terrorist organization within the purview of the Human Security Act,” he added.
However, the National Democratic Front (NDF), CPP’s political arm, was not included in the proclamation.
