PSEi, peso start week on positive note

MANILA – – Optimism sustained the strength of both the Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) and the peso at the start of this week.

PSEi finished Monday with a jump of 0.49 percent, or 43.10 points, to 8,857.72 points.

Most of the other indices tracked the main gauge, led by the broader All Shares, which rose 0.55 percent, or 27.84 points to 5,126.59 points.

The sectors were led by the Mining and Oil, which registered an uptick of 1.

30 percent followed by the Industrial, 1.04 percent; Holding Firms, 1.02 percent; and Property, 0.50 percent.

On the other hand, Financials and Services declined by 0.87 and 0.06 percent, respectively.

Total volume during the day reached 735.82 million shares amounting to HP5.6 billion.

Losers, however, surpassed gainers at 109 to 99 while 52 shares were unchanged.

The peso finished Monday at 50.

37, little changed from the 50.40 Friday last week.

It opened at 50.32, sideways from its 50.27 start in the previous session.

It traded between 50.41 and 50.30, resulting in an average of 50.35.

Volume for the day reached PHP697 million, up from the USD588.5 million at the end of last week.

The currency pair is seen to trade between 50.30 and 50.50 Tuesday.
