on

The House of Representatives passed a bill seeking to establish a national identification system. There were 142 house members who approved while seven contradicted.

The “Filipino ID card” will contain confidential information including the name, birth date, blood type, height, weight, and permanent address and it “shall serve as the official government-issued identification document of a cardholder in dealing with national government agencies, local government units (LGUs), government-owned or controlled corporations (GOCCs), and government financial institutions (GFIs)”.

The ID will also have security features that shall prevent tampering or forgery.

Furthermore, under the bill, all Filipinos, 18 years old and above, both in the Philippines and abroad, are required to have the ID.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Statistics Authority will be the one to work on the implementation of cards and to ensure the security of the system, in accordance with all applicable laws and policies.
