MANILA — The number of crimes in the country decreased by more than 8 percent in the first 10 months this year, the Philippine National Police (PNP) announced Wednesday.

In a statement forwarded by PNP spokesperson Chief Supt. Dionardo Carlos, the police said that total crime volume from January to October this year dropped by 8.44 percent at 452,204 incidents, compared to 493,912 incidents recorded in the same period last year.

This number can be broken down into 94,565 index crime cases and 357,639 non-index crime cases.

Index crimes also declined by 20.56 percent during the same period, according to data from the PNP Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM).

A significant drop in crimes was recorded in all regions except in Calabarzon and Northern Mindanao where a slight increase in non-index crimes was noted.

Classified as index crimes are murder, physical injury, robbery, theft, rape, carnapping and cattle-rustling.

Corresponding decreases were also noted among murder, homicide and physical injury cases during the period.

Theft cases were most prevalent, which made up 32.44 percent of all recorded index crime incidents; while physical injury comprised 28.44 percent and robbery at 14.75 percent of all index crime cases.

The decline in the number of crimes in the country comes amid the PNP’s continuous intelligence-driven focused police operations against organized crime groups and other lawless elements. (PNA)
