DTI chief, biz group pay tribute to SyCip

MANILA — Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez paid homage on Monday to the late business leader Washington SyCip, who passed away on Saturday.

Lopez recognized the contribution of SyCip in pursuing social development initiatives that benefitted many Filipinos.

“We are saddened to hear of the passing of an inspiring Filipino icon, who has transcended beyond the business circles as he pursued social development initiatives that benefit the Filipino people,” he said.

“Mr. Washington SyCip was truly a man for others, and his age did not limit him from pursuing his passion to empower others,” the trade chief added.

SyCip died at the age of 96 while on board a Philippine Airlines flight to Vancouver, according to the SGV & Co. accounting firm founded by SyCip.

Likewise, the Makati Business Club (MBC) recognized SyCip’s influence on he business community. SyCip was a trustee of MBC since it was organized in 1981 until 1994.

“Mr. SyCip helped build the SGV, one of the country’s most important businesses and helped found AIM, its premier business school,” MBC said a statement.

“He advised captains of industry, Philippine presidents and many others who benefitted from his wisdom. Makati Business Club and many of its members benefitted greatly from his generosity,” the business group added.
