MANILA— To show support to teachers, several Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) regional officials and staff joined the World Teachers’ Day (WTD) celebration held Thursday in Legazpi City, Albay.

The occasion also served as the observance of the National Teachers’ Day (NTD). Thousands of educators from across the country attended the event organized by the Department of Education (DepEd).

In a statement Friday, TESDA Director General Guiling Mamondiong commended Filipino teachers for their dedication and contributions in honing the skills of their students.

According to him, teachers do not just teach basic skills, but also teach their students to think critically.

During the National Teachers’ Month (September 5 to October 5) launch at the DepEd Central Office, Education chief Leonor Briones noted that teachers should also encourage students to deal with things and solve their problems.

Also, Briones encouraged teachers to be an example to their students, and emphasized that as teachers, they don’t just tell students what to do, but ensure that they serve as leaders setting a good example.

“We have to be creative, think out-of-the-box. If we want to encourage them to learn, we must learn continuously. If we require them to read, we should also read and carry a book in our bags,” she said during the First National Assembly of Education Leaders held recently in Manila.

Meanwhile, the WTD and NTD observance aim to pay tribute and acknowledge the role and commitment of teachers in nurturing the students.

This year’s NTD had the theme, “Gurong Pilipino: Kaakbay sa Progreso”.

Aside from TESDA regional officials and staff, some TESDA trainers also joined the occasion that was attended by teachers, government officials, private companies and volunteer organizations.
