A barangay officer who was supposed to be helping police authorities in Makati under “OplanTokhang”, was arrested on Tuesday after he was caught selling illegal drugs to an undercover agent while using a government owned vehicle.

51-year old Virgilio Awit Jr, is a Kagawad of Barangay East Rembo who was caught selling “shabu” or methamphetamine hydrochloride worth P1,500 along C5 road.

Authorities confiscated three sachets of shabu, his mobile phone, and marked money. It has been reported that Awit had represented his barangays in various meetings with the Makati Peace and Order Council and had been an active volunteer during Oplan Tokhang operations by knocking on the doors of suspected drug pushers and users, urging them to surrender.

Now that he has been apprehended, Insp. Jeson Vigilla said that his services may have been a front to protect his status, and that Awit had also protected other drug suspects while selling drugs through trusted referrals.

Awit will be facing charges for illegal possession and sale of prohibited drugs.
