7 killed in Batangas road mishap

SANTO TOMAS, Batangas–Seven people were died while another one remains in critical condition in a road collision along JP Laurel Highway in San Roque Village here Saturday afternoon.

Officer-on-case PO2 Emiliano Carandang in a phone interview Sunday said that a Toyota Corolla (TBV-625) carrying eight people, including a driver, was heading north from Tanauan City to Santo Tomas town when it collided with a 10-wheeler truck bearing plate number ACO-7694.

Upon reaching San Roque Village, the Toyota Corolla swerved into the opposite lane colliding head-on with the truck.

Due to the impact of the collision, the passengers of the car suffered multiple injuries in different parts of their bodies and were immediately brought to Saint Francis Cabrini Hospital and Laurel District Hospital for medical treatment.

Six of the victims were brought to Laurel District Hospital but were pronounced dead on arriva while one of the two brought to Saint Francis Cabrini Hospital died while undergoing treatment and the other one is still at the intensive care unit (ICU).

The truck driver, identified as Rodolfo Mandac, surrendered to authorities after the incident.

Sto. Tomas police authorities have yet to release the names of the fatalities.
