De Lima lawyers on top of DOJ drug raps
MANILA—Facing three criminal charges related to her alleged involvement on the proliferation of illegal drug trade in the New Bilibid Prison (NBP), Sen. Leila de Lima on Friday assured that her lawyers are on top of the situation.
“My lawyers are already on top of the situation and will be filing the corresponding motions as soon as the cases are raffled to a specific branch,” De Lima said.
De Lima, former Justice Secretary, made this statement after the Department of Justice (DOJ) on the same day filed three drug-related charges against her in the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court.
She reiterated that she has long been prepared to face the charges having already packed her bags and bid goodbye to her friends and family.
The neophyte senator further said that she would continue to fight to prove her innocence.
“We will continue to fight this battle and wage our own war for human rights and democracy in the end, justice will prevail and we will be vindicated,” she said.
Several groups belonging to a coalition called “One for Leila” gathered in a press conference Friday to reject what they described as De Lima’s “imminent arrest”.
One for Leila stressed that the accusations were baseless and urged the public to remain vigilant.
The groups under the coalition are Akbayan Youth, Aksyon, Democratic Warriors, EDSA 30 Pagkakaisa, Lambda Rho Sigma Sorority, The Silent Majority, among other groups.
