‘Condom should be available in schools confidentially’
MANILA—A Senator on Friday said that he supports the availability of condoms in schools but it should be given confidentially.
“It has to be available but it has to be available confidentially and should not be available in a way that promotes premarital sex,” Sen.
Alan Peter Cayetano said in a press conference in BGC, Taguig City.
Cayetano acknowledged that are certain groups that could not be stopped from engaging in sexual activities but noted that distributing condoms could also create more problems than solutions.
He further said that he was for sex and reproductive health education but maintained that it should also be “sensitive to culture and religion.”
The senator also said that he was a believer of “no sex until marriage.”
He meanwhile urged the Department of Health (DOH) to take a step back and first explain the condom distribution program.
To recall, the DOH last year announced that it will be distributing condoms in schools in efforts to prevent the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, this was met with criticism from the Catholic Church.
