MANILA—Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, a losing presidential candidate in the May 9 polls, was rushed to the intensive care unit of Makati Medical Center (MMC), her husband Narciso “Jun” Santiago announced on Wednesday.

Santiago said her wife, who is sick and has suffered complication, was brought to the MMC on Monday but she was transferred from her private room to the ICU on Tuesday night.

In a press statement, the lady senator thanks all her family, friends, supporters, fans, and others who helped pray for her recovery and sent their well-wishes on Facebook.

Jun Santiago said the visitors are not allowed and that gifts will not be accepted, such as flowers and other blooms.

He said his wife is bearing well with her trademark sense of humor.

In the middle of 2014, Defensor-Santiago announced that she has Stage 4 lung cancer, forcing her to give up her seat as a judge in The Hague-based International Criminal Court based in the Netherlands.

In July last year, the feisty senator said she has beaten cancer with the help of ‘wonder pill’ and later filed certificate of candidacy for her third attempt to the highest position in the land.

With 1,455,532 votes, Defensor-Santiago finished fifth and last behind President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, Mar Roxas, Senator Grace Poe and Vice President Jejomar Binay.
