MANILA – Amid her interview with senatorial aspirant Alma Moreno becoming viral and earning mixed reactions from netizens, Headstart anchor Karen Davila explained how she tried to help the candidate go through her interview questions.

“I research a lot and try [to] come as prepared as I can every single day. If you watched the interview in full, you will see that I shifted to Tagalog, during many times – I tried to help her,” Davila said.

Many praised the news anchor for being upfront in asking questions to Moreno regarding the current issues the Philippines has been facing. Some, however, accused her of making it hard for her interviewee to answer the questions and make a stand on the issues.

“Dapat marunong din si [Davila] na i-level ang sarili sa ini-interview niya… Nakakaawa ang maging mahina, wala na ngang maisagot pinipiga pa rin… Alma is a guest of your show and she is not applying for any particular job na kailangang gisahin,” Instagram user @agp142000 commented in one of Davila’s posts.

(Davila should know how to put herself in the level of the person she’s interviewing… It’s pitiable to be weak, she (Moreno) couldn’t answer yet she was pressed with the questions… Alma is a guest of your show and she is not applying for any particular job that she has to be perused.)

“[Davila] should have changed her manner of questioning towards Alma… Kasi naman obvious na hindi na niya masagot ‘yung questions tapos nag-continue pa din siya with another questions (sic); sana nag-adjust si Karen,” another Instagram user @nikandi16 also commented.

(Davila should have changed her manner of questioning towards Alma… It’s obvious that she (Moreno) couldn’t answer the questions yet she (Davila) continued with the other questions; I hoped Karen adjusted.

Davila, for her part, immediately explained her side as the interviewer, asserting that her previous interviews were tougher by comparison. She also believed that anyone seeking public office should have at least basic knowledge on the country’s issues.

“When someone is running for higher office – they must have an understanding of issues. This is a standard we owe to the Filipino people… You will choose in the end. My job is to ask the hard questions,” she said.

Obviously Alma Moreno doesn’t watch Headstart. She should have not agreed to be interviewed on that forum. Headstart is a serious show on Philippine television, one of the most credible , quality shows that people all over the world take seriously!!! Comparable to the former Nightline by Ted Koppel in the U.S. A very good understanding of english is necessary since she will be running for a legislative position on a national level. We should remember that all philippine laws are english. It is the same reason why all members of the philippine bar took up statutory construction during their study in law. This is just a pain to watch. It’s not even about the fact that she’s not that proficient in English but the fact that she lacks knowledge (as of now) needed to be a senator. Cased closed. And Karen Davila wasn’t being harsh nor rude. She was just being straightforward and wanted to get serious answers. This is for the sake of our country people. We cannot afford to be lenient on matters like these. I don’t think Alma Moreno deserves any position in public service at all. The people deserve better. If, Ms. Dolly (and the rest of the people na todo tanggol kay Ms AwkwardNess) your standard is poor as a reflection of how you value yourself and the Filipino people, then people. Keep your vote to yourself. Gugunawin mo lang ang Pilipinas para sa mga opinion at pagtatanggol nyo sa isang mangmang.
Being a senator / lawmaker is a serious matter, one should know how to communicate and understand what is being argued or passed in the senate! How could you take Alma seriously or how could she pass a law if she couldn’t even understand the words “with reservation.” I think that is what the audience are trying to point out—comprehension of the law—
