MANILA — Popular micro-blogging website Twitter was flooded with a number of tweets which contained the hashtag #Vigan, which trended nationwide and worldwide on Saturday.

Vigan emerged as the sixth trend on Twitter nationwide and eighth trend worldwide.

The heritage city which is famous for the preservation of its Spanish-era architecture, trended after photos of two of the county’s top fast food chains, Jollibee and McDonald’s emerged on the feed.

According to @ViganPH, the official Twitter account of the city and its people, the largest McDonald’s branch in the country is located in the city.

Netizens immediately posted their personal photos of the Vigan branches of McDonald’s and Jollibee tagging the Vigan Twitter account.

Last December 2014, Vigan City was named as one of the “New 7 Wonders Cities” of the world, according to a global poll conducted by the New7Wonders Foundation.

It is the same institution that endorsed and promoted the underground river in Puerto Princesa City as one of the New7Wonders of Nature.

Aside from Vigan, the six other Wonders Cities include Beirut, Lebanon; Doha, Qatar, Durban, South Africa; Havana, Cuba; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and La Paz, Bolivia.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) earlier welcomed the inclusion of Vigan as a New7Wonders City at the same time, expressed confidence that with this development, Vigan will draw even larger numbers of foreign and domestic tourists.
