NDP motion demands respect for live-in caregivers
NDP Critic for Employment and Social Development Jinny Sims introduced a motion in Parliament calling on the Conservative government to remove the caps on permanent resident applications for live-in caregivers.
“These caps to permanent resident applications are arbitrary and they target the Filipino community here in Canada,” said Sims. “I’m calling on Conservatives and Liberals to put their politics aside and support my motion to remove these unfair caps.”
The caps to applications introduced by Immigration Minister Chris Alexander could mean that almost 1500 fewer caregivers will have the opportunity to apply for permanent residency.
“We’ve seen how much damage these caps have caused in other immigration categories, such as family reunification,” added Sims. “We know these caps are wrong and that’s why we’re taking action to stop them.
Live-in caregivers deserve respect in Canada,” Sims said.
