MANILA, Philippines – Original Pilipino Music (OPM) versus Manila sound: what’s the difference?

OPM is loosely defined as the general term for all music composed by Filipino artists from various genres and styles. Manila Sound, on the other hand, is a genre of music specifically attributed to songs that have that ‘70’s vibe, and originated in the 1970’s. Like other homegrown styles of music, the genre falls under the OPM umbrella.

Although it is one part within the whole, Manila Sound is largely considered a forerunner of t OPM. Born in Manila in the 1970’s and pioneered by siblings Dennis and Rene Garcia of the band Hotdog, the movement had its heyday throughout the era and waned in the early 1980’s. Manila produced countless unforgettable Pinoy hits and standards, such as Hotdog’s Manila, Ikaw Ang Miss Universe Ng Buhay Ko , Panaginip and Langit Na Naman. Later years saw the rise of bands like VST and Co., The Boyfriends, Apo Hiking Society, and Hagibis, among many others.

Manila Sound will be heard loud and clear once more, as the stars of the music-defining movement come together on September 6, 2014 at the grand ballroom of Solaire Resort & Casino for a night of the hits that shaped OPM as we know it.

The concert, billeted Then and Now, will showcase various Pinoy artists and musicians, like actor, politician and original lead singer of Hagibis Sonny Parsons; Sampaguita; Gary Arriola and Bob Guzman of Boyfriends; original VST & Co. member Male Rigor; and the Rex band with Carlo Gaa as MD.

The audience can expect monster hits and all-time favorites, like Hagibis’ Katawan, Legs, Ilagay Mo Kid, Nanggigigil Kami; Sampaguita’s Bonggahan, Laguna, Nosi Balasi; Boyfriends’ Sumayaw Sumunod, Dahil Mahal Kita, Nais Kong Malalaman Mo, Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal; VST & Co.’s Awitin Mo Isasayaw Ko, Rock Baby Rock, Ipagpatawad Mo, Tayo’y Magsayawan and many more.

The nearly three-hour-long concert will also feature Mark Mabasa and friends performing Manila Sound classics like Handog, Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko, Isang Mundo Isang Awit, TL Ako Sa ’Yo, Macho Gwapito, etc.

It will surely be a night of non-stop catchy rhythms and foot stomping enjoyment, with hints of nostalgia, as the best grooves and tunes are brought forth for all to enjoy!

Manila Sound Then and Now is brought to you by Solaire Resort & Casino, Steve O’ Neal Productions and MediaSync. Tickets are on sale at Ticketworld, SM Tickets, SM Malls, National Bookstores, Ayala Malls, Robinsons and the concierge at Solaire Resort & Casino.
