South Africa: 8 killed in building collapse
JOHANNESBURG — South African officials say one person died and another seven are presumed dead from the collapse of a building under renovation.
Luyanda Majija, a spokeswoman for emergency responders at the scene, said Monday that one body has been recovered from the rubble in the Alberton area, southeast of Johannesburg.
Majija says rescue teams are trying to reach the bodies of another seven people under the rubble, and that those people are believed to be dead.
South African media say builders were among the casualties.
Several men were also injured.
