MACGREGOR — A charge of first-degree murder has been laid in the death of a 96-year-old man in southern Manitoba.

Niels “Arne” Nielsen of MacGregor was found dead in his home on May 25.

RCMP have said the senior was frequently outside in his yard and they were seeking information from anyone who may have seen or spoken to Nielsen in the days before his death.

Herb Seaver, a MacGregor town councillor, says the death has changed the outlook of many residents.

Seaver says they’re scared and are paying close attention to any strangers who show up in the community.

Mounties say a 21-year-old man from MacGregor has been arrested.

Jason Conway was scheduled to appear in a Portage la Prairie courtroom Monday.
