MANILA — The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) on Monday named Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) chief Honorito Chaneco as new officer in charge of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT-3) replacing erstwhile General Manager Al Vitangcol.

In an exclusive interview Monday, DOTC Spokesperson Michael Sagcal said Vitangcol has been instrumental in introducing ideas as alternative to current technical problems at MRT such as the express train service and the testing of articulated bus.

Several issues recently hounded the MRT management such as the extortion allegations made by Czech ambassador Josef Rychtar and the series of technical problems at the rail system greatly affecting its services and the commuting public.

Vitangcol said he was not relieved but resigned from his post.
