BURNABY — John Horgan has been acclaimed the new Leader of the BC NDP and Leader of BC’s Official Opposition.

“Today New Democrats are uniting behind John Horgan’s strong leadership,” said Craig Keating, President of the BC NDP. “John is a leader who understands that BC needs a balanced approach to everything we do – ensuring that communities benefit as our province moves forward.”

First elected to the BC Legislature in 2005 and serving as MLA for Juan de Fuca, John has been a strong proponent of resource development in BC – making sure communities get jobs and benefits, while protecting BC’s natural beauty.

John has served as Columbia Basin Treaty Negotiator, ensuring local communities benefited directly from the hydro dams in their region. He also served as Associate Deputy Minister of Finance in years the government balanced the budget.

John is an outdoorsman who has hiked, camped, and gotten lost all over BC. He and his wife, Ellie celebrated their 30thanniversary and have two sons who recently graduated from university.

“John understands the huge challenges faced by families – particularly young – people in BC,” concluded Keating. “I know that he’s the leader who will make sure that all British Columbians have a bright future.”

“I want to thank outgoing leader Adrian Dix for his dedication and service to our party and his efforts to make BC a better place for everyone,” said Keating. “I know that as an MLA he will continue to be an effective advocate on important issues for his constituents and people across this province.”

Horgan’s official inauguration will take place on Sunday, May 4 at 2:00 PM at the Renaissance Hotel in Vancouver.

Horgan will be available to media on Friday morning. Details of a media availability will follow.
