TORONTO – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has announced a voluntary recall of six baby food products.

The agency says the Heinz Canada products are being recalled because a packaging defect could allow microorganisms that spoil food into the containers.

The food inspection agency says that Health Canada has conducted a safety assessment of the products and has concluded the health risk from eating foods from these containers is very low to remote.

Still, the food inspection agency says people should refrain from consuming the recalled products and watch for symptoms like nausea and diarrhea if they have been eaten.

The affected products are: peas, zucchini and spinach; sweet baby vegetables; beef bolognese with vegetables; beef with butternut squash, rice and spinach; tuna sweet corn chowder and butternut squash apricot peas couscous.

The agency says the recall was triggered by a consumer complaint, but says there have been no reports of illness associated with the products to date.

Details of the lots of products affected by the recall can be seen on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s website at http://www.inspection.gc.ca/about-the-cfia/newsroom/food-recall-warnings/complete-listing/2014-03-09/eng/1394379805526/1394379825591.
