MANILA\u2013The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said that President Rodrigo Duterte may have a surprise for workers on May 1, Labor Day.<\/p>\n

“We are preparing an announcement by the President to address the issue of wages para naman may maibigay siyang regalo pagdating ng Mayo 1,” said Labor and Employment Silvestre Bello III at a press conference in Manila Wednesday afternoon regarding the government’s preparations for the commemoration of 115th Labor Day.<\/p>\n

But, he did not give any specific details as to what would be the possible benefits for the workers.<\/p>\n

“Basta benefits lang. Depende kay President (Duterte). We are not yet sure kung ano ‘yung announcement niya… basta may announcement,” the Labor and Employment chief assured.<\/p>\n

“We realized the workers will need some ayuda (assistance) but you would also have to consider the position of management,” he added.<\/p>\n

President Duterte is set to lead Labor Day rites in Davao on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0are honored that the\u00a0President himself will be gracing our main Labor Day celebration,”\u00a0Bello said.<\/p>\n

The Chief Executive will be leading the\u00a0Labor Day assembly and dialogue with workers at the People\u2019s Park in Davao City.<\/p>\n

“The President, together with labor officials will meet trade union leaders from the national and local federations to discuss and address labor and employment issues and concerns,” he said.<\/p>\n

The meeting will be followed by a Labor Day Assembly which will be attended by about 10,000 workers. It will serve as an avenue for different labor and civil society organizations, as well as ordinary workers from the public, formal, informal, youth, women, and migrant sectors to come as one to commemorate the achievements of the labor movement and to continuously advocate for better working, economic, and social conditions.<\/p>\n

During the activities a house and lot\u00a0from\u00a0the Home Development Mutual\u00a0Fund (HDMF)\u00a0and\u00a015 tricycle units from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and Employees\u2019 Compensation Commission (ECC) will be raffled.<\/p>\n

Another highlight\u00a0of this year\u2019s\u00a0Araw ng Paggawa\u00a0is the simultaneous\u00a0Trabaho, Negosyo, Kabuhayan (TNK)\u00a0job and business fairs\u00a0which will be conducted\u00a0in\u00a055 various sites\u00a0throughout the country.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0activity replicates the\u00a0Trabaho, Negosyo, Kabuhayan\u00a0(TNK) initiative of the DOLE and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), which aims to bring employment opportunities and entrepreneurship at the grassroots level, hence the localization of the\u00a0job and business fairs.<\/p>\n

There will be a total of\u00a0201,811 employment opportunities from 1,138 participating employers composed of\u00a08\u00a0government agencies,\u00a0889\u00a0local companies, and\u00a0241\u00a0overseas employers.<\/p>\n

Among the vacancies,\u00a03,422\u00a0are\u00a0in the government sector;\u00a0while in the private sector\u00a069,944 are local\u00a0jobs\u00a0and\u00a0128,445 are overseas employment.<\/p>\n
