{"id":9573,"date":"2014-05-10T13:17:59","date_gmt":"2014-05-10T05:17:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=9573"},"modified":"2014-05-10T13:18:00","modified_gmt":"2014-05-10T05:18:00","slug":"target-guidelines-seek-improving-high-rises-structural-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/05\/10\/target-guidelines-seek-improving-high-rises-structural-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Target guidelines seek improving high-rises&#8217; structural design"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_9624\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9624\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/construction-building.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9624\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/construction-building.jpg\" alt=\"ShutterStock image\" width=\"1000\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/construction-building.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/construction-building-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9624\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>ShutterStock image<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (PNA) &#8212; The public works department targets enforcing, from 2014 onwards, guidelines for implementing National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) provisions on installing earthquake-recording instrumentation in high-rise buildings nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such instrumentation will generate data on ground movement during earthquakes in the country so structural engineers can have local information essential in better designing high-rises nationwide,&#8221; said Napoleon Nicolas Jr., building management cluster engineer from Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).<\/p>\n<p>He noted at present, foreign data still account for much of information for designing as absence of guidelines to implement the NSCP provisions continues fueling lack of facts on actual earthquake-induced ground movement in the Philippines, a tremor-prone country.<\/p>\n<p>DPWH and Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP) are already working on such guidelines, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The 2010 NSCP provides that &#8220;unless waived by the building official, every building in Seismic Zone 4 over 50 m. in height shall be provided with not less than three approved recording accelerographs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Such accelerographs must be interconnected for common start and timing, NSCP notes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8221;The instruments shall be located in the basement, mid-portion and near the top of the building,&#8221; NSCP continues.<\/p>\n<p>Seismic Zone 4 covers seismically active areas, noted Nicolas.<\/p>\n<p>Experts said accelerograph is an instrument that recordsacceleration of the ground during an earthquake.<\/p>\n<p>Nicolas said DPWH is already reviewing the revised instrumentation guidelines ASEP prepared then submitted to the agency this week for comment and possible approval.<\/p>\n<p>He noted DPWH will immediately enforce the guidelines once this agency approves these.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;DPWH hopes to begin enforcing the guidelines this year,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, DPWH Acting Exec. Dir. for national building code development Johnson Domingo said the construction sector is increasingly clamoring for guidelines to implement such NSCP provisions.<\/p>\n<p>Even building officials in the country are already inquiring about the guidelines, he observed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;DPWH is keen on finalizing the guidelines as soon as possible,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">He added compliance with NSCP provisions on earthquake-recording instrumentation ultimately aims to better protect life, limb and property nationwide.
