NEW YORK\u2014Over his career, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson recorded 50 wins and six losses. But he recently notched another big loss in Latin America \u2014 this time as a coach of a bird.<\/p>\n

Tyson travelled to Suriname as part of the new Fusion TV documentary series \u201cOutpost \u201c and was soundly beaten when he entered a bird in a songbird contest, a cherished local tradition.<\/p>\n

Cameras captured Iron Mike as he learned about the contest, located a bird to enter \u2014 he dubbed the tiny guy \u201cLittle Mike\u201d \u2014 but then suffered a TKO when a competing champion cheeped and peeped more than his bird did in the same 15-minute period.<\/p>\n

\u201cLittle Mike let us down, man. I was in his corner, though,\u201d said Tyson by phone from Las Vegas. \u201cIt was just amazing meeting the people, meeting the culture \u2014 I had a great time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series, kicking off on Sunday with Tyson’s episode, mixes travel adventure, history and journalism to shine a light on global stories. The first season focuses on Latin America and includes as hosts \u201cThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert\u201d bandleader Jon Batiste, \u201cBrain Games\u201d star Jason Silva, and transgender model Carmen Carrera. Spanish versions air on UniMas.<\/p>\n

Tyson was lured onto the show by the chance to visit a country he’d never heard of and his love of birds. The former boxer has loved pigeons and raced them since he was a kid in Brooklyn. (Sunday’s show recorded the moment Tyson lovingly released the bird in Suriname he competed with.)<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife always says, ‘The reason I keep my pigeons is they connect me to my childhood,\u201d’ Tyson said. \u201cOnce it’s in your blood, it never leaves. It’s just who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back home, Tyson is watching his former profession lose out to professional mixed martial arts but thinks he may have the answer to put the \u201csweet science\u201d back on top: A compelling boxer somehow unifies the heavyweight title.<\/p>\n
