(Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PattyHajduTBSN\/photos\/a.1541475866069533.1073741825.1541473532736433\/1808202496063534\/?type=1&amp;theater\">Patty Hajdu\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OTTAWA \u2014 Labour Minister Patty Hajdu said even wealthier women need more support when it comes to moving from their careers into motherhood \u2014 and back again.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 budget extended parental leave to 18 months, but anyone who wants to take the lengthier time off must spread 12 months worth of payments over that time \u2014 receiving 33 per cent of average weekly earnings \u2014 because there is no corresponding increase in benefits.<\/p>\n<p>The benefit rate for those taking 12 months or less will remain at 55 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The Liberals were under pressure from both employers and labour groups to scrap the proposal during consultations last year, as both sides expressed concerns it would leave out the lower-income families they said they want to help.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Hajdu acknowledged that it will not be for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly, it is not going to be the solution for every woman and that&#8217;s why we have other measures in the budget that are going to support women regardless of what stage and what earning bracket they&#8217;re in,\u201d Hajdu told reporters as Liberal MPs took a break from their rare weekend caucus meeting on Parliament Hill.<\/p>\n<p>The budget contains other measures \u2014 including money for child care \u2014 that Hajdu said are aimed at boosting female participation in the workforce across all socio-economic backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe focus is making sure that every woman has the support to reach her true potential and that includes women across all spectrums,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Hajdu said one thing she learned early on in her former role as minister for status of women is that women in well-paying jobs \u2014 such as those involved in capital markets \u2014 also need support as they become parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are women that occupy high positions, well-paying positions, who talked about the challenge that they had balancing that early childhood stage with their emerging and very lucrative careers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Hajdu suggested extending parental leave could be one way to remove barriers to having more women in corporate leadership positions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that one of the struggles that we have is actually women at the upper end as well, reaching positions of leadership,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really is one component of how we&#8217;re moving forward to make sure that women have every opportunity to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The government expects the proposal to extend parental leave to cost $152 million over five years, beginning this coming fiscal year, and $27.5 million annually after that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OTTAWA \u2014 Labour Minister Patty Hajdu said even wealthier women need more support when it comes to moving from their &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":95490,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,16],"tags":[17074],"class_list":["post-95489","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news-ca","category-news","tag-patty-hajdu","mauthors-joanna-smith","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/95489","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=95489"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/95489\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/95490"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=95489"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=95489"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=95489"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
