(Photo:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/IAmAngelinaOffical\/photos\/a.365453580492977.1073741828.346027709102231\/367211306983871\/?type=3&amp;theater\"> Angelina Jolie\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>GENEVA \u2014 Angelina Jolie has made a strong defence of the United Nations, saying the world body, as \u201cimperfect\u201d as it is, needs reform but also support.<\/p>\n<p>The American actress and special envoy for the U.N. refugee agency decried a \u201crising tide of nationalism masquerading as populism, and the re-emergence of policies encouraging fear and hatred of others\u201d during a speech at the U.N. in Geneva on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Saying she was speaking as a \u201cproud American\u201d and \u201can internationalist,\u201d Jolie said some politicians were elected \u201cpartly on the basis of dismissing international institutions and agreements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#8217;t mention President Donald Trump, amid concerns that the U.S. administration could cut crucial funding for the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to recognize the damage we do when we undermine the U.N., or use it selectively, or not at all,\u201d Jolie said. She said \u201cthere is not a single humanitarian appeal anywhere in the world that is funded by even by half of what is required.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jolie addressed a ceremony honouring Sergio Vieira de Mello, the U.N. envoy to Iraq who died in a 2003 bombing attack in Baghdad, and cited his faith in the institution despite its shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.N. is an imperfect organization because we are imperfect.
