(Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/spongebob\/photos\/a.438949656365.235029.42798291365\/10150771616801366\/?type=1&amp;theater\">SpongeBob SquarePants\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The creator of Nickelodeon&#8217;s \u201cSpongeBob SquarePants\u201d says he has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Hillenburg tells Variety that he will continue to work on the show and his other passions for as long as he&#8217;s able.<\/p>\n<p>Lou Gehrig&#8217;s disease, also known as ALS, is a progressive disease that attacks nerve cells that control the muscles. There is no known cure.<\/p>\n<p>The 55-year-old Hillenburg is a former marine biology teacher who created the series featuring an animated sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Nickelodeon says in a statement to Variety that Hillenburg \u201cis a brilliant creator who brings joy to millions of fans\u201d and that the network&#8217;s \u201cthoughts and support\u201d are with Hillenburg and his family.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The creator of Nickelodeon&#8217;s \u201cSpongeBob SquarePants\u201d says he has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig&#8217;s disease.
