(Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MargaretAtwoodAuthor\/photos\/a.1316129351741744.1073741830.138175562870468\/1316131608408185\/?type=3&amp;theater\">Margaret Atwood\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>LONDON\u2014Margaret Atwood, Annie Proulx and Mary Gaitskill are among North American contenders for the international Women&#8217;s Prize for Fiction.<\/p>\n<p>ONDON \u2014 Margaret Atwood, Annie Proulx and Mary Gaitskill are among North American contenders for the international Women&#8217;s Prize for Fiction.<\/p>\n<p>Atwood&#8217;s Shakespeare-inspired \u201cHag-Seed,\u201d Proulx&#8217;s historical saga \u201cBarkskins\u201d and Gaitskill&#8217;s horse-centric saga \u201cThe Mare\u201d are among 16 finalists announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The prestigious prize is open to female English-language writers from around the world, and the longlist includes authors from Nigeria, South Africa, Canada, the United States, Britain and Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Contenders include Nigeria&#8217;s Ayobami Adebayo for \u201cStay With Me,\u201d Britain&#8217;s Linda Grant for \u201cThe Dark Circle\u201d and Britain&#8217;s Rose Tremain for \u201cThe Gustav Sonata.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The contenders will be whittled down to a shortlist on April 3, and the winner of the 30,000-pound ($37,000) prize will be announced June 7.<\/p>\n<p>The annual award is officially named the Baileys Women&#8217;s Prize after its sponsor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON\u2014Margaret Atwood, Annie Proulx and Mary Gaitskill are among North American contenders for the international Women&#8217;s Prize for Fiction.
