(Photo:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DisneyPixar\"> Disney Pixar\/ Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>LOS ANGELES \u2013Alan Barillaro of Chippawa, Ont., has won an Oscar for his animated short \u201cPiper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The six-minute film, produced by Pixar, depicts a baby bird and her mother trying to dodge waves while searching for food on the beach.<\/p>\n<p>The film had a coveted spot in theatres, screening before Pixar&#8217;s feature-length smash \u201cFinding Dory,\u201d which was 2016&#8217;s top-grossing film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPiper\u201d was one of three projects from Canadian animators in contention for the best animated short Oscar.<\/p>\n<p>The others were \u201cPear Cider and Cigarettes,\u201d directed by Vancouver&#8217;s Robert Valley, and \u201cBlind Vaysha\u201d by Montreal&#8217;s Theodore Ushev.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a legacy of great animation from Canada that you feel really proud to be a part of,\u201d said Barillaro during a recent interview with The Canadian Press.<\/p>\n<p>Barillaro has worked at Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, Calif., for nearly two decades.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s contributed to some of Pixar&#8217;s biggest hits, including \u201cA Bug&#8217;s Life,\u201d \u201cMonsters, Inc.\u201d and \u201cWALL-E.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A graduate of Sheridan College in Oakville, Ont., he fell in love with drawing as a child and studied at the Animation House in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>For \u201cPiper,\u201d he used beach sounds and a whimsical score rather than dialogue to help convey the story.<\/p>\n<p>His reference footage came from underwater GoPro images captured by his nine-year-old daughter and seven-year-old twin boys during a family trip in Kauai, Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p>He called the Oscar nod for his first foray into direction \u201csurreal\u201d and \u201chumbling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you start these films, you&#8217;re just trying to convey something very personal to the audience&#8230;. You don&#8217;t really think beyond that when you&#8217;re making a film,\u201d said Barillaro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#8217;re doing your best as an artist just to say what you&#8217;re trying to say.
