LOS ANGELES \u2013Montreal’s Sylvain Bellemare has won the best sound editing Oscar for \u201cArrival.\u201d<\/p>\n

He won in a field that also included teams from \u201cDeepwater Horizon,\u201d \u201cHacksaw Ridge,\u201d \u201cLa La Land\u201d and \u201cSully.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quebec’s Denis Villeneuve directed \u201cArrival,\u201d which stars Amy Adams as a linguistics expert who tries to communicate with aliens that have landed on Earth.<\/p>\n

Jeremy Renner plays theoretical physicist Ian in the Quebec-shot film, which also stars Forest Whitaker as a military leader.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Bellemare \u2013 along with two \u201cArrival\u201d sound mixers \u2013 won a trophy from the British Academy Film Awards.<\/p>\n

Bellemare’s previous credits include Villeneuve’s 2010 drama \u201cIncendies,\u201d which was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign-language film.<\/p>\n

His other films include \u201cIt’s Not Me, I Swear!\u201d and \u201cMonsieur Lazhar\u201d by Quebec director Philippe Falardeau.<\/p>\n

For the heptapod aliens in \u201cArrival,\u201d he found inspiration in Pink Floyd’s music.<\/p>\n

He said echoes and other noises from the psychedelic rock era helped him create the sound of alien movements.<\/p>\n

Bellemare was also a contributor to the creation of the aliens’ language, which was inspired partly by a melange of animal sounds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
