He was 73.<\/p>\n<p>His wife, Jody Hannon, told The Associated Press that Stubblefield died of kidney failure at a Madison, Wisconsin, hospital around noon. He had been suffering from kidney disease for 10 years, and had been hospitalized for a few days, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Stubblefield performed on several of Brown&#8217;s classics in the 1960s and early 70s, including \u201cCold Sweat,\u201d \u201cSay It Loud \u2014 I&#8217;m Black and I&#8217;m Proud,\u201d \u201cI&#8217;ve Got the Feelin&#8217;,\u201d and the album \u201cSex Machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he was best known for a short solo on Brown&#8217;s 1970 single, \u201cFunky Drummer.\u201d Rolling Stone magazine said it was sampled on over 1,000 songs and served as the backbeat for countless hip-hop tracks, including Public Enemy&#8217;s \u201cFight the Power,\u201d Dr. Dre&#8217;s \u201cLet Me Ride,\u201d LL Cool J&#8217;s \u201cMama Said Knock You Out\u201d and Run-D.M.C.&#8217;s \u201cRun&#8217;s House.\u201d It even turned up on Ed Sheeran&#8217;s \u201cShirtsleeves\u201d and George Michael&#8217;s \u201cFreedom &#8217;90,\u201d the magazine said.<\/p>\n<p>Hennon said Stubblefield saw \u201cvery little\u201d in royalties and never expected them.<\/p>\n<p>But Stubblefield was held in high esteem by his fellow musicians. When Prince got wind in 2000 that Stubblefield was deep in debt from a fight against bladder cancer, he personally paid $90,000 to cover his bills, she said. \u201cClyde was considered his favourite drummer,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Stubblefield was \u201ca very nice southern gentleman\u201d from Chattanooga, Tennessee, but had lived in Madison, his wife&#8217;s hometown, since the early 1970s, she said.
