{"id":88896,"date":"2017-02-10T23:15:54","date_gmt":"2017-02-11T04:15:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=88896"},"modified":"2017-02-10T23:19:19","modified_gmt":"2017-02-11T04:19:19","slug":"two-found-dead-in-wreckage-of-plane-crash-in-manitoba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2017\/02\/10\/two-found-dead-in-wreckage-of-plane-crash-in-manitoba\/","title":{"rendered":"Two found dead in wreckage of plane crash in Manitoba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SANFORD, Man.\u2014Two men have died in a small plane crash in Manitoba that took several hours for searchers to locate due to poor weather.<\/p>\n<p>RCMP say the single-engine Cessna took off on Thursday from St. Andrews, north of Winnipeg, and was reported late at its destination in Winkler.<\/p>\n<p>Police, along with a Canadian Armed Forces search-and-rescue team, eventually found the wreckage in a field near Brunkild, about 45 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg early Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, there were two males on board \u2014 a 60-year-old and a 41-year-old \u2014 and both were deceased when we located the plane,\u201d RCMP spokeswoman Tara Seel said.<\/p>\n<p>Police said both men were from Winkler.<\/p>\n<p>Albert Paetkau told CTV Winnipeg that the 60-year-old who died was his brother, Art Paetkau while people on social media identified the younger man as electrician John Friesen.<\/p>\n<p>Paetkau is the registered owner of a plane with the tail markings seen on the wreckage.<\/p>\n<p>Friends said he owned Arty&#8217;s Air Service, a company that specialized in crop spraying.<\/p>\n<p>The site said Paetkau started his business in 1979 and had been a pilot in the agricultural field for more than 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>Jake Rempel, who owns an electrical shop near Arty&#8217;s Air Service, said he knew both men who died in the crash.<\/p>\n<p>He told CTV that Paetkau had been a pilot as long as he&#8217;d known him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I have two funerals to go,\u201d Rempel said.<\/p>\n<p>The Transportation Safety Board said it had deployed investigators to the site.<\/p>\n<p>Seel said searchers used snowmobiles, but weather conditions and visibility were poor at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey filed a flight plan, so they (researchers) were able to use that.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SANFORD, Man.\u2014Two men have died in a small plane crash in Manitoba that took several hours for searchers to locate &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":65579,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-88896","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news-ca","category-news","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/88896","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=88896"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/88896\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/65579"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=88896"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=88896"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=88896"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
