The best original screenplay nominees were: Kenneth Lonergan&#8217;s script for \u201cManchester by the Sea,\u201d Barry Jenkins&#8217; \u201cMoonlight,\u201d Damien Chazelle&#8217;s \u201cLa La Land,\u201d Taylor Sheridan&#8217;s \u201cHell or High Water\u201d and Jeff Nichols&#8217; \u201cLoving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the WGA Awards can be strong predictors of the Academy Award screenplay nominees, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has already deemed<br \/>\n\u201cLoving\u201d (inspired by Nancy Buirski&#8217;s documentary) and \u201cMoonlight\u201d (based on Tarell Alvini McCraney&#8217;s play) adapted scripts.<\/p>\n<p>The nominees for best adapted screenplay were: \u201cArrival,\u201d penned by Eric Heisserer; \u201cFences,\u201d by the late playwright August Wilson; \u201cHidden Figures,\u201d by Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi; \u201cNocturnal Animals,\u201d by Tom Ford; and \u201cDeadpool,\u201d by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The snarky superhero film, easily the most unexpected choice of the bunch, earlier scored two nods for this Sunday&#8217;s Golden Globes.<\/p>\n<p>Nominees for best documentary screenplay went to \u201cAuthor: The JT LeRoy Story,\u201d written by Jeff Feuerzeig; \u201cCommand and Control,\u201d with a telescript by Robert Kenner and Eric Schlosser, from a story Brian Pearle and Kim Roberts; and Alex Gibney&#8217;s \u201cZero Days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The WGA will name the winners to its 69th annual awards on Feb. 19 in simultaneous ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles.
