This parallel consultation will be held prior to the Seventh Global Forum on Migration and Development. The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">GFMD is a \u201cstate-led, informal and non-binding\u201d process that was created during the first High Level Dialogue in September 2006, which has met annually since.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Rev. Stuart<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0Lyster of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">the United Church of Canada will be participating at<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Fifth International Consultation\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">with the support of the BC Conference\u00a0of the United Church of Canada\u00a0through its Justice Advocacy\u00a0Circle.\u00a0Rev. Lyster will bring\u00a0the\u00a0stories, share the struggles and\u00a0the\u00a0advocacy work\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">MIGRANTE BC,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">one of its grassroots commun<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">ity part<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">ners.\u00a0<\/span><br clear=\"none\" \/> <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Rev. Lyster echoed these words from the 2013 Consultation that he had also attended last year with some\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">60 churches, ecumenical groups, and migrant<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0organizations<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">: &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-style: italic;\">\u201cMigrants are human beings who cannot be reduced to mere commodities to be traded and exchanged in the global market.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Last year, the consultation was timed with the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Second United Nations High Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The CWWM4 rejected the GFMD\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">approach and agenda based on\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-style: italic;\">development policies\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">that did not take into account \u201cmigrants\u2019 stories and narratives and their critique of neoliberal globalization, especially its impact on their lives, livelihoods and social relations. The CWWM4 added, &#8220;The magnitude of neoliberal globalization, and attendant deepening of structural inequalities within countries, and between countries and regions, have commodified further both human beings and their labor, unduly privileging profit and unsustainable development practices.&#8221;<\/span><br clear=\"none\" \/> <\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CWWM takes into account that \u201cmigrants are not just neighbours; they are persons equal in rights and dignity like everyone else. Taking migrant concerns as our concerns, and asserting migrant rights as human rights, means we are entertaining angels, no longer unaware, but with full knowledge of who they are and what their aspirations are: bearers of God\u2019s likeness and instruments of God\u2019s compassion and hospitality, justice and peace, abundance and sustainability.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rev. Lyster will raise the\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Migrante&#8217;s<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">call for permanent status for temporary foreign workers upon arrival. The Canadian<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Temporary Foreign Workers Program (TFWP) has been highly criticized recently because of the expose of the many abuses allegedly committed by McDonalds in Victoria Island and Tim Hortons in Fernie, BC.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Migrante has always maintained that the very precarious and temporary nature of the work status of the temporary foreign workers makes them vulnerable to abuse and exploitation and to less than equal access to Canadian labour rights and standards.
