{"id":82593,"date":"2016-11-02T06:16:24","date_gmt":"2016-11-02T10:16:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=82593"},"modified":"2016-11-02T06:16:24","modified_gmt":"2016-11-02T10:16:24","slug":"senator-gladdened-filipino-fishermens-renewed-access-panatag-shoal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2016\/11\/02\/senator-gladdened-filipino-fishermens-renewed-access-panatag-shoal\/","title":{"rendered":"Senator gladdened by Filipino fishermen\u2019s renewed access to Panatag Shoal"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_41158\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41158\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/scarborough-shoal-panatag-shoal-bajo-de-masinloc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41158\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/scarborough-shoal-panatag-shoal-bajo-de-masinloc.jpg\" alt=\"Filipinos at Bajo de Masinloc\/Panatag Shoal (Photo courtesy of the Philippine Embassy in Norway)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/scarborough-shoal-panatag-shoal-bajo-de-masinloc.jpg 640w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/scarborough-shoal-panatag-shoal-bajo-de-masinloc-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41158\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Filipinos at Bajo de Masinloc\/Panatag Shoal (Photo courtesy of the Philippine Embassy in Norway)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA \u2013 Senator Francis Pangilinan on Wednesday welcomed the renewed access of Filipino fishermen to the Pantag (Scarborough) Shoal despite China&#8217;s refusal to leave the disputed territory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if China won\u2019t leave Panatag Shoal, we are glad about the news that since Oct. 16, our fisher folk have been able to go there without being harassed by Chinese ships,\u201d Pangilinan said.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that although neither the Philippines nor China has dropped its sovereignty claims on the shoals, it is still a welcome development that the two countries\u2019 relationship \u201cseems better\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The senator also reiterated that the Panatag Shoal is within the Philippines\u2019 Exclusive Economic Zone as it is about 230 km. from Zambales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which the international arbitral tribunal in July upheld, we have the exclusive rights to fish there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Pangilinan meanwhile cited the need to care for the sea\u2019s offerings and for fishermen who risk their lives to earn a living and provide Filipinos with fish, crabs, lobsters, and other marine wealth.<\/p>\n<p>He said that caring for the sea is \u201ceveryone\u2019s duty, the Chinese\u2019s and the Filipinos\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also expressed hope that measures to establish a Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources becomes a reality so that treasures from the sea and the country&#8217;s fisher folk are better cared for.<\/p>\n<p>According to news reports, there are four Chinese Coast Guard ships but no Chinese Navy ship is in the area.
