MANILA, Philippines\u2014Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday discussed in detail the conversation he had with Chinese prime minister Xi Jinping during his state visit to China where the two leaders discussed the disputed Scarborough Shoal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t talk of arms; we didn\u2019t have discussion on war. We talked about how we can help one another,\u201d Duterte said in Filipino during his visit to typhoon-stricken Cagayan.<\/p>\n

Both leaders asserted their countries ownership over the disputed waters, according to Duterte.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe (Xi) said, \u2018This is really ours historically and we won\u2019t give up on this.\u2019 I said, \u2018especially us because we won in court,\u2019\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

Despite Duterte\u2019s mention of the United Nation\u2019s Arbitral Tribunal award that affirmed the Philippines\u2019 interest over another disputed territory, Spratly\u2019s Island, Duterte said, \u201cI will not insist now, I will not impose now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The arbitral tribunal on July also disproved China\u2019s historic claim to the Island.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Tribunal concluded that there was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights to resources within the sea areas falling within the \u2018nine-dash line,\u201d the award read.<\/p>\n

Duterte also ruled out the idea of going to war in order to resolve the dispute.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will not go to war now. I will not waste the lives of my soldiers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Both leaders agreed to settle the dispute through bilateral talks but China said it would take time, according to Duterte.<\/p>\n

Although China and Philippine\u2019s joint discussion on the disputed waters won\u2019t be happening any time soon, Duterte sees no problem as long as the claim follows the arbitral tribunal\u2019s ruling.<\/p>\n

The Philippines and China will continue to discuss the maritime dispute as the issue \u201ccan\u2019t be left hanging\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

Duterte also said that local fishermen may be able to fish in Scarborough Shoal again but \u201cwe just have to wait for a few more days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once Filipinos are able to fish again in Bajo de Masinloc, the local name of the island, Duterte asked the locals to avoid fishing in the shallow area of the island where fishes breed as it could threaten the stability of marine life there, a plead China accepted and vowed to fulfill.<\/p>\n

However, Duterte is uncertain if his new ally would comply.<\/p>\n
