MANILA \u2013 Northern Luzon increasingly risks facing inclement weather from the severe tropical storm, with international name \u2018Megi\u2019, which state forecasters expect to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) Saturday (Sept. 24) and head west-northwest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat storm can intensify further,\u201d said weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio of the state weather bureau, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).<\/p>\n

He warned about such possibility, noting that \u2018Megi\u2019 is still over water where the storm can draw the energy it needs to increase its strength.<\/p>\n

Communities concerned must already prepare for \u2018Megi\u2019 since the storm is already very near the boundary of PAR, said Aurelio.<\/p>\n

Northern Luzon will likely begin experiencing the storm\u2019s effects around Monday (Sept. 26), he noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cCentral Luzon can be affected as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018Helen\u2019 is the local name PAGASA will use for \u2018Megi\u2019 once the storm enters PAR.<\/p>\n

PAGASA forecasting chief Robert Sawi earlier said \u2018Helen\u2019 will likely remain inside PAR until around Wednesday (Sept. 28), crossing Northern Luzon.<\/p>\n

He expects \u2018Helen\u2019 to exit PAR later that day.<\/p>\n

Typhoon \u2018Gener\u2019 (international name \u2018Malakas\u2019) battered Northern Luzon\u2019s northernmost Batanes province and surroundings earlier this month with moderate to heavy rains, maximum sustained winds of up to 175 kph and gustiness of up to 210 kph.<\/p>\n

Before the onslaught of \u2018Gener\u2019 however, near-super typhoon \u2018Ferdie\u2019 (international name \u2018Meranti\u2019) also dumped moderate to heavy rains there this month while packing maximum sustained winds of up to 210 kph and gustiness of up to 245 kph.<\/p>\n

PAGASA earlier located \u2018Megi\u2019 at some 1,650 km. east of Central Luzon at 2 a.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u2018Megi\u2019 packed maximum sustained winds of 95 kph and gustiness of 120 kph, said PAGASA.<\/p>\n
