(Photo: Marcelino Pascua\/PCOO)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA \u2013 President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday expressed his regrets over the controversy that arose from the \u2018strong comments\u2019 he made to certain media questions that came across as a personal attack on United States President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement read by Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella in the sidelines of the ASEAN leaders\u2019 meeting in Vientiane, Laos, the President likewise said that he is \u201clooking forward to ironing out differences arising out of national priorities and perceptions, and working in mutually responsible ways for both countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement in full read:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe meeting between the United States and the Philippines has been mutually agreed upon to be moved to a later date.<\/p>\n<p>While the immediate cause was my strong comments to certain press questions that elicited concern and distress, we also regret it came across as a personal attack to the US President.<\/p>\n<p>Our primary intention is to chart an independent foreign policy while promoting closet ties with all nations, especially the US with which we have had a long standing partnership.<\/p>\n<p>We look forward to ironing out differences arising out of national priorities and perceptions, and working in mutually responsible ways for both countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said that it was press reports that President Obama would \u201clecture\u201d Duterte on extrajudicial killings prompted the strong comments.<\/p>\n<p>This led to the cancellation of the bilateral meeting between Obama and Duterte this week.<\/p>\n<p>Andanar said that both delegation have agreed to meet at a later date because of issues that still need to be worked on.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the events, the Palace official said that President Duterte continues to value the alliance between the Philippines and the US as both countries share common goals in their pursuit of the war against drugs, terrorists, crime and poverty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also thanked President Obama for the US\u2019 firm support for the Philippines during the G20, where President Obama emphasized the importance for China to abide by its obligations under international law and underscored the United States\u2019 unwavering commitment to the security of its treaty allies,\u201d Andanar said.<\/p>\n<p>The Palace official said that while Duterte asserted his intent to chart an independent foreign policy, the President also expressed his \u201cdeep regard and affinity for President Obama and for the enduring partnership between our nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuterte likewise stressed that in securing and preserving the rights and liberties of our people, it is imperative that the fight against illegal drugs, terrorists, crimes and poverty must be won in order to preserve the principle and values upon which our democratic way of life is anchored,\u201d Andanar said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA \u2013 President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday expressed his regrets over the controversy that arose from the \u2018strong comments\u2019 he &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":78068,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1145,16,95],"tags":[6054,11409,2444],"class_list":["post-80810","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headline","category-news","category-news-ph","tag-duterte","tag-president-duterte","tag-rodrigo-duterte","mauthors-cielito-reganit","mauthors-philippines-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/80810","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=80810"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/80810\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/78068"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=80810"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=80810"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=80810"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
