Marie, Ont., who claimed Doig painted the canvas, once valued at more than $10 million.<\/p>\n<p>Doig, who lived in Toronto decades ago, disavowed the work, arguing the acrylic landscape was by a Peter Doige, a man who once spent time locked up in Thunder Bay for a drug offence. Doig said he had never been in the northern Ontario city and only began painting on canvas in 1979.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview minutes after the verdict, Fletcher, 62, expressed his disappointment, but said he remained convinced he owns an authentic Doig.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:absolute;left:-99195px;\"> buy hydroxychloroquine online <a href=\"https:\/\/cphia2023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/jpg\/hydroxychloroquine.html\">https:\/\/cphia2023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/jpg\/hydroxychloroquine.html<\/a> no prescription pharmacy <\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the evidence that we brought forth really wasn&#8217;t given much weight,\u201d Fletcher told The Canadian Press.<\/p>\n<p>He said an appeal was possibile, but noted the case had already cost \u201chundreds of thousands of dollars\u201d of which he said he had paid his fair share.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe we just can\u2019t afford to move on,\u201d Fletcher said. \u201cIt hasn\u2019t been a cheap venture, that\u2019s for sure.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:absolute;left:-99195px;\"> buy flomax online <a href=\"https:\/\/cphia2023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/jpg\/flomax.html\">https:\/\/cphia2023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/jpg\/flomax.html<\/a> no prescription pharmacy <\/div>\n<p>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among other things, Feinerman noted yearbook photos proved Doig, now 57, was at a Toronto high school and not in the Thunder Bay prison where Fletcher worked.<\/p>\n<p>Doig \u201cabsolutely did not paint\u201d the impugned work, which was in fact by Doige, Feinerman found.<\/p>\n<p>The suit had alleged Doig&#8217;s disavowal of the canvas \u2013 ostensibly to hide his criminal past \u2013 potentially cost Fletcher millions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have rarely seen such a flagrant example of unethical conduct in the U.S. courts \u2013 nor a case that inflicted such needless burdens on a defendant,\u201d Doig\u2019s lawyer, Matthew Dontzin, said in a statement after the verdict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArtists should be grateful to Peter for having the ethical and financial fortitude to fight tirelessly to ensure that justice prevailed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fletcher has said he pursued the claim despite the risk of having to pay hefty court costs.<\/p>\n<p>William Zieske, who represents Fletcher, said he assumed he would see a request for costs in the coming weeks. Zieske said the \u201cperfectly reasoned and reasonable\u201d decision was nevertheless \u201cincorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething is not right,\u201d Zieske said from Chicago. \u201cThere is something more going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dispute dates back 40 years, when Fletcher worked at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre and also attended classes at Lakehead University. At the school, he met a teenager named Peter Doige, who ended up in jail for possession of LSD and, during art classes at the institution, painted the disputed work.<\/p>\n<p>The 86-centimetre by 105-centimetre canvas, which depicts a desert scene with a pond, is signed \u201cPete Doige 76.\u201d Fletcher bought the painting for $100 as a way of helping Doige.<\/p>\n<p>Five years ago, one of Fletcher\u2019s friends said the canvas was by Doig. That spurred Fletcher to do some digging, which, according to his claim, turned up \u201cuncanny convergences:\u201d Both Doig and Doige were born in the 1950s in Scotland; Doig\u2019s family immigrated to Canada when he was a child; and he has admitted to having dabbled in LSD as a teen.<\/p>\n<p>Fletcher and Chicago-based Bartlow Gallery alleged Doig and his agents \u201cwilfully and wrongfully interfered\u201d with their efforts to sell the painting. Doig called the lawsuit a scam.
