But if you aren\u2019t storing items correctly to maximize flavour and freshness \u2013 or buying too much and not using it up \u2013 you\u2019re wasting it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think we\u2019re going to make all these things and then we get home and life kicks in and we\u2019re just not able to follow through on our wonderful ideas, so we overbuy&#8230; and then we\u2019re stuck with too many tomatoes on the counter that we end up having to move into the fridge \u2013 and then we lose the best flavour possible,\u201d&#8217; says Getty Stewart, a home economist in Winnipeg.<\/p>\n<p>Many people are surprised to learn it&#8217;s best to store tomatoes at room temperature \u2013 ideally 20 C to 22 C \u2013 until they soften. Refrigerating causes a loss of flavour and a mealy texture.<\/p>\n<p>Once ripe, \u201cif you can\u2019t eat them within the next day and they\u2019ve become really, really soft, then it\u2019s time to put them in the fridge&#8230; to save them from spoiling,\u201d says Stewart. \u201cBut let them warm up to room temperature when you\u2019re ready to eat them.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:absolute;left:-99195px;\"> buy addyi online <a href=\"https:\/\/cdhc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/png\/addyi.html\">https:\/\/cdhc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/png\/addyi.html<\/a> no prescription pharmacy <\/div>\n<p>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When storing fresh fruit, herbs and vegetables, don\u2019t wash them until just prior to use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFruits and vegetables have their own natural ways of preserving the moisture inside of them,\u201d says Stewart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you scrub that off, not only are you removing any waxes that have been added by the producers, but you\u2019re removing the natural preservatives around the fruit as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips on storing other seasonal produce for peak freshness:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stone Fruits<\/strong> (peaches, nectarines, plums)<\/p>\n<p>Store at room temperature for one to three days till ripe, then place in a plastic bag in the fridge for three to five days.<\/p>\n<p>The plastic bag will reduce air circulation and prevent moisture and other flavours in the fridge from getting at the fruit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These can be kept on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there\u2019s that point again where they\u2019re becoming way too soft versus sacrificing a little bit of that sweet flavour and putting it in the fridge,\u201d says Stewart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Raspberries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite herculean efforts we can\u2019t make raspberries last beyond two, maybe three days,\u201d says Stewart.<\/p>\n<p>Producers package raspberries in a single or double layer in clear plastic containers with air holes and a lining at the base. When buying berries from a farmers market or picking your own, mimic these ideal storage conditions by lining the bottom of a container with a towel and carefully setting in one or two layers, being careful not to squash them and providing enough space to discourage mould growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Corn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not eating corn right away, leave cobs in their husks and place in a plastic bag in the crisper. Watch that moisture doesn\u2019t develop in the bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s another produce item you should be eating as soon as you possibly can. When you do get a lot of greens, for example, if you have a CSA (community supported agriculture) box and you\u2019re getting a whole bunch of greens, start eating the lighter, more tender greens first because the kale, spinach, chard and beet greens are going to last longer,\u201d says Stewart. \u201cEven a romaine will last longer than a butter leaf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Refrigerate greens unwashed in a plastic bag. Wrap in a towel first to keep off surface moisture that can cause spoilage. To perk up leaves that are starting to wilt, soak them in ice-cold or salted water for about 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Herbs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Storage depends on the herb\u2019s foliage.<\/p>\n<p>Woody herbs like rosemary, thyme and sage are quite dry and you want to keep them that way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI typically wrap them in towels and keep them in a sealable container in the fridge, even a plastic bag, but the trick is to keep the moisture out,\u201d says Stewart.<\/p>\n<p>She stores cilantro and parsley like a bouquet of flowers.
