TORONTO \u2013 Movies by Quebec director Denis Villeneuve, fashion designer Tom Ford, three-time Academy Award winner Oliver Stone, and the buzzy \u201cBirth of a Nation\u201d are headed to this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.<\/p>\n

Organizers announced the first slate of 2016 festival films today, including Villeneuve\u2019s sci-fi thriller \u201cArrival,\u201d starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.<\/p>\n

The film fest\u2019s opening film will be the star-studded remake of the 1960 western \u201cThe Magnificent Seven,\u201d with a cast including Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke. The film will make its world premiere in Toronto.<\/p>\n

Also bound for the fest with big buzz is Stone\u2019s \u201cSnowden,\u201d a dramatization of Edward Snowden\u2019s decision to leak classified security documents to the media. Stars include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley and Melissa Leo.<\/p>\n

Audiences will get to see London, Ont., native Ryan Gosling sing in the musical romance \u201cLa La Land.\u201d \u201cWhiplash\u201d writer-director Damien Chazelle helms the cast that also features Emma Stone and J. K. Simmons.<\/p>\n

The Toronto International Film Festival runs Sept. 8-18.<\/p>\n

The closing film will be the Vancouver-shot coming-of-age comedy \u201cThe Edge of Seventeen,\u201d starring Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson and Kyra Sedgwick.<\/p>\n

Other highlights announced Tuesday:<\/p>\n

* Ewan McGregor makes his directorial debut on \u201cAmerican Pastoral,\u201d He also stars, alongside Dakota Fanning and Jennifer Connelly, in the adaptation of Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.<\/p>\n

* The biographical drama \u201cBarry\u201d looks at U.S. President Barack Obama\u2019s years as a college student in New York City.<\/p>\n

* Rob Reiner directs \u201cLBJ,\u201d starring Harrelson as president Lyndon B. Johnson and Jennifer Jason Leigh as his wife Lady Bird Johnson.<\/p>\n

* In \u201cQueen of Katwe,\u201d directed by Mira Nair, David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong\u2019o star in the real-life story of Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi.<\/p>\n

* \u201cThe Journey is the Destination,\u201d by Toronto native Bronwen Hughes, stars Maria Bello in the story of slain photojournalist Dan Eldon.<\/p>\n

* Other Canadian content includes \u201cUnless\u201d by Ireland\u2019s Alan Gilsenan, based on the novel late Canuck novelist Carol Shields.<\/p>\n

* Musical flicks include the star-packed animated comedy \u201cSing,\u201d the Justin Timberlake concert doc \u201cJT + The Tennessee Kids\u201d by Jonathan Demme, and \u201cThe Rolling Stones Ole Ole Ole! : A Trip Across Latin America\u201d by Paul Dugdale.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
